A land apart from the rest of the state, southwestern Colorado is set off by the spectacular mountain wall of the San Juan Range. The Ancestral Puebloans (also called the Anasazi) who once lived here created cliff dwellings that more closely resemble structures found in New Mexico and Arizona than anything you might expect to see in Colorado. The ancient cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde National Park are a case in point, and there are similar but less well-known sites throughout the area, primarily around Cortez. Durango is the area's major city. Its vintage main street (ca. 1880) and narrow-gauge railroad hearken back to the Old West days of the late 19th century, when it boomed as a transportation center for the region's silver and gold mines.

Colorado is famous for its ski slopes. Without a doubt, some of the finest powder to be had is within Colorado’s borders, but the state has so many other attractions to offer. Colorado is a state of mind. You may notice it yourself as you walk the streets of its towns and cities: people here are generally happy, laid back, physically fit, and friendly. I was taken by this attitude the first time I wandered into Colorado over 20 years ago. Now I have made a dream come true--I actually live here. People here tend to be very generous, with their time and their money. Is it because of all the hippies? All the outdoor sports? The gorgeous scenery? What contributes to this attitude of happiness? I say it’s all three, and then some. You’ll find Colorado welcoming to all lifestyles-- to families, couples without children, singles, gays and lesbians. We’re by and large a very non-judgmental state with a world view. Foreign tourists will enjoy the helpfulness of the locals as well.

Rocky Mountain National Park
The snow-mantled peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park rise above verdant alpine valleys and glistening lakes. One third of the park is above tree line, and here tundra predominates - a major reason why these peaks and valleys have been set aside as a national park. Elk bugling in the fall, bighorn sheep lambing in the spring, coyotes howling, beavers building, and eagles soaring aloft – Rocky Mountain National Park is one of America's great places to see wildlife and birds. A Daytrip to Denver
Even by American standards, Denver is a young city. The gold strike that launched it occurred just 140 years ago. But what Denver may lack in 17th-century history, it makes up for in youthful vigor. Denver is full of energy and you can feel it. Since 1990 it has built a brand-new airport, baseball stadium, central library, downtown amusement park and light-rail system. That much change might unsettle an older town, but Denver has absorbed the additions and the city's national profile is on the rise. More about A Daytrip to Denver
